Promoting Commercial Tree Plantations in Schools and homes
The onset of the rains is usually welcome news for farmers and pastoralists who depend on the season
to enhance their agricultural activities.
According to latest prediction by the weathermen,rainfall will be well distributed in most parts of the
country but more enhanced in areas like Western, Coastand Nyanza provinces.
This covers areas where Ace Africa Kenya is running a pilot commercial tree project in schools.
The initiative, which kicked off in 2018 is a three-year partnership programme with Friends of Mau Water
shade (Fomawa) and Dandelion Africa, to share best practices and programs in forestry within their
catchment areas, with the support of the Dulverton trust.
In this arrangement, each organization commits to providing technical and organizational support to the other two as a way of communally improving their mandates. So far, the project in five schools, namely Mukhweya.
Ranje, Yalusi, Sangalo and Kabula primary schools in Bungoma county is showing remarkable progress.
Teachers attached to child-to-child (CtC) clubs and tasked to head the projects say later in the year, they will start reaping the fruits of their hard work.
“First plantations were done in June last year and replacement done in July, where 384 seedlings were
planted. We have achieved 90 per cent growth and our plantation is starting to look like a forest,” said
Chrisanthus Khamala, a teacher at Sang’alo RC Primary School. He is one of the teachers trained by Ace Africa
Kenya and attached to CtC club in the school
